Have you ever wondered what has defined your favourite artist or band over their lives? Like yourself, your favourite musicians have all been, in one way or another, shaped and defined by the music they grew up with. In this brand new feature, we aim to find what has made some of the most respected musicians what they are today.
At the age of 33, Vinnie Caruana has been rocking audiences now for over 15 years. With a career that involves the likes of The Movielife, Peace’d Out and more recently I Am The Avalanche, the singer/songwriter has become one of the most well respected performers not only on the post-hardcore circuit, but also amongst the pop punk faithful. Vinnie has been no stranger to stripping things back to just himself and a guitar, playing multiple solo shows in his native New York, but with the release of his debut solo EP on the way next week (4th February 2013), the world will finally get a taste of what the great man has to offer on a more intimate level.
We sat down with Vinnie to discuss the key influences he has built over the years that make him the musician he is today.
Most Inspiring Band
Longevity-wise, The Bouncing Souls are extremely inspiring. I hope to have as long and fruitful a career as they have had. Music-wise, Jets to Brazil, Pedro the Lion, Descendants and Seaweed will always influence the way I write.
Most Inspiring Album
Even though I’ve never really done a hardcore record before, Blood, Sweat and No Tears by Sick Of It All got me hooked into the hardcore scene. I wore that record out. It’s flawless for a hardcore record and definitely is one of the records that lead me on a long path of starting bands and performing live.
Most Inspiring Song
My favorite song is ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Kate Bush. It’s perfectly arranged and brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. ‘More than a Woman’ by the Bee Gees is also up there for me.
Most Memorable Gig
Seaweed and Into Another at Irving Plaza in New York City was pretty big for me. Seaweed went on to be one of my all-time favorites and it was great to see my hometown giving them love.
Your Favourite Venue
I really like the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool! It’s a rad bar with great food and a cozy little dungeon to play in. After show DJ’s play New York street rap, too.
Your Proudest Moment as an Artist
This solo record may be my proudest moment thus far. I’m extremely happy with the final product and it’s intensely personal with my name across the cover. This I Am The Avalanche record we are currently writing may surpass it, but we’ll just have to see.
