Fei Comodo [Live]
Essex lads hit the north to entertain Aberdeen
It's a long time since Cafe Drummonds has been this busy, and tonight the venue hosts Essex livewires Fei Comodo, who have brought along Don Broco to ensure this evening will go down a success.
Kicking off proceedings though are two local bands, the opening act being Dividing The Silence. I reviewed this bands set some time ago and was rather critical, but being one open to correction, I would like to point out that this young band, despite being young, have managed to write some songs that show some deep knowledge in the metal genre. Some of the songs still need a lot of work though, with the drums and bass often getting muddled up and doing little to break apart and come into their own, but its early days for these guys. The live set is one that could also be improved. Frontman Craig takes to his role well and often entices a quiet crowd to move more, but the rest of the band could do with some of his energy. Despite this, Dividing The Silence could do well for themselves once they get a bit more experience behind them. One thing is for sure, this is a big improvement from the last time I seen them. 3/5
Next up is Eleven:Eleven, who find themselves playing to a crowd which has grown slightly, with their post hardcore influenced rock music. It's a shame that the early part of the set, in particular 'Ladies & Gentleman', is let down slightly by a problem with the drum kit and poor sound on the vocals, but the band battle on and things improve quickly. Despite the sound from the mics coming across too quiet, maybe due to a lack of sound check, Vocalist Chris carries on with an abundance of energy, backed up by the quality drumming of Gavin Wilson. With a nice slow song midset slowing down proceedings, the set is broken up quite well, and is never monotonous. This isn't the best night Eleven:Eleven have had, and it's probably due to reasons out of their control, but it's still a triumphant one. 3.5/5
Before the headliners hit this small stage, it's Don Broco's turn to entertain with their small set of silly metal. If you refuse to take this set seriously and decide to just have some fun, these lads will entertain the room to no end. The problem for some though is that the band stick out on the bill like a sore thumb. This can't be said for the majority of the crowd though and many people are left with smiles intact, and Don Broco leave with a lighter merch box to take to their next city. 3/5
It's getting rather late by now and by the time Fei Comodo hit up the stage, the room is packed. Bursting into full fledged chaos from the opening song, it becomes very clear what sets this five piece apart from the bands that preceded them. It's nothing to do with the music itself, which isn't really of magnificent quality. It's simply the momentum they build onstage, and how they focus so hard on pulverising you with the sheer noise and precision of each note. Marc Halls is an outstanding frontman, crowding over his audience almost constantly, ensuring he has their undivided attention while bouncing around the stage like a man possessed. All this from a gentleman who is on the mend from illness, which always makes a crowd a little more grateful. At the end of the set, the band get Don Broco's Rob onstage before dividing the room into two sides, and ending the night with chaos as the crowd go nuts to a band who know how to entertain. 4/5
