Sky Eats Airplane

Texas own Sky Eats Airplane released their second album this year, a solid record that pretty much made their debut effort look really bad. Daily Dischord had the chance to chat with Lee Duck from the band about their forthcoming invasion of the UK and current tours. Be sure to check these guys out when they eventually explode on our side of the pond

DD: Hello there! Let’s get this thing started, who am I talking to here and what the hell do you do in the band?

Lee: My name is Lee Duck and I play guitar and do most of the electronica and lyrics.

DD: For our readers that may have not heard you guys, tell us a little bit about yourselves and you’re music

Lee: Well first off the band came from a hobby after school during high school. We came up with just a silly idea to mix both electronica and metal/hardcore elements. We really didn’t even take it too serious until we had record labels and managers calling us wanting to throw contracts in our faces. At that time we were only a two piece, and our old vocalist Brack wasn’t really interested in making it a career. I recruited 3 guys all from this badass local band from the area called In Theory who used to draw hundreds of kids in our area to shows due to their crazy performances. We all grew up in Texas except for our new singer who we found from a MySpace contest to look for a new singer. And hence the puzzle was solved and the not-too-serious 2-piece was transformed into a full 5-piece band.

DD: You released your second album from Equal Vision mid 2008 and scored 4/5 from myself in a review. How do you feel this score is deserved and how is this record an improvement from the last?

Lee: This album is so much cooler than the last. I feel almost embarrassed listening to our old album sometimes, even though it established our sound somewhat. I mean hell, it was the byproduct of two dudes messing around in a bedroom. Err I mean messing around with musical instruments and recording in a bedroom? Haha. The new record was just structured better. The old album was made by coming up with random electronica stuff then branching from that. This album was made from the ground up by starting with guitar riffs and drums and then adding electronica on top of that for depth.

DD: So you signed to Equal Vision early 2007. When did you first find out the label were interested in the band?

Lee: EVR has actually been interested in us since early 2006 or something. I was still in college and they flew down to Texas from New York asking what we thought about being in a nationally touring and signed band. I didn’t even know what a record label exactly did at the time. But through the thick and thin they stuck with us with all of our changes and still wanted to sign us. And plus they are pretty rad people.

DD: How have things been with the label since you guys signed?

Lee: Great. Couldn’t ask for better support.

DD: Some UK news websites claimed you were supposed to be supporting A Day To Remember in the UK next year. Was this true, and if so, why are you no longer supporting?

Lee: We were really looking forward to that tour, but unfortunately had to pass on the offer to deal with some things going on with our personal lives at home.

DD: Are their any plans to hit the UK sometime in 2009?

Lee: YES! We are planning on coming over sometime in the summertime or so before or after our first US headliner.

DD: At this current moment in time, you are touring the States with Emarosa, Inhale Exhale, and Haste The Day. How has the tour been so far?

Lee: A lot more chilled than the last tour we were on, as we seemed to get in trouble every second. We called up the Haste The Day guys and were like “guys we are going to be a few minutes late getting to the club, we are so sorry” and they were just like “uhh no problem dudes… see you guys soon”. If that was the Senses Fail tour we would have gotten privileges taken away much similar to be grounded by your parents.

DD: Any funny/strange/creepy stories you could tell us about the tour so far?

Lee: They play Christmas music in between all the bands. It’s kind of funny. Ha.

DD: Now for a cheeky question, who is the most annoying member of the band to tour with and why?

Lee: Our tour manager Harry is a 6’4 ogre and tends to take up the bed when you’re sharing with him. He also likes to participate in activities in his sleep such as drooling, farting, and the infamous man-cuddle.

DD: So 2008 is drawing to a close, what do you believe is your biggest achievement this year?

Lee: Touring 6 months straight without going entirely insane in the membrane.

DD: What do you aim to achieve next year (2009)?

Lee: World domination. Mwahahaha.

DD: What is your favourite album of 2008?

Lee: Lydia – Illuminate. Puts me in a lovey-dubbey mood.

DD: What album released in 2008 really let you down?

Lee: The newer As Tall As Lions EP was a bit of a letdown because I liked their self titled CD so much.

DD: OK, that’s it from us! Thanks a lot for your time, it is appreciated! Any last words for those readers?

Lee: Everyone have a happy holiday and be sure to buy some new sick merch of ours from our online store at merchnow.com!!!
