The Black Dahlia Murder – Abysmal
The Black Dahlia Murder are probably one of the most consistent Death Metal bands of the 21st century. Best known for their expertblend of brutality and unmistakable hooks, these guys somehow manage to be heavy as balls without sacrificing any of their accessibility. While this album doesn’t exactly break new ground for the Detroit heavyweights, you feel as if everything that made you fall in love with the band in the first place has been turned up to 11!
From start to finish, riff after riff is thrown at you with no remorse. The likes of ‘Asylum’ and ‘The Fog’ just rip into you, while ‘Stygiophobic’ and ‘That Cannot Die Which Eternally Is’ (despite a slightly distracting midi orchestrated intro) convey a sense of menace that many Death Metal bands fail to capture. There are a few generic grinders present on this album. However, even they are made more interesting by the fantastic guitar and drum work on display here. All in all, The Black Dahlia Murder are still setting the standard for modern sounding Death Metal in 2015
