Weekend Maintenance (November 4th)
It’s been a long time since I updated this blog so here I am, about to tell you about some small changes I plan to make to the website over the weekend. I’ve been pretty busy lately but finally the time has come for me to do a bit of work on the site. Here is a breakdown of the work I plan to have finished by Tuesday.
Facebook “Like” Button for Articles – COMPLETE
This has actually already been implemented. Now users who are logged into Facebook can “like” each and every article on the website. All this little widget does is allows you to show your friends you like a article, and also shows the total number of users who have read and “like”d the article too. It’s pretty cool, very easy to use, and I really encourage you all to check it out. It will help us spread to the masses, like a dirty disease. The button can be seen under every article.
Generic Facebook “Like” Button – COMPLETE
Soon enough you will see a small change next to the Daily Dischord logo. It will be a small Facebook image which allows visitors to the site to “like” our official Facebook page, thus receive updates of articles and competitions via the social media service. If you are already a friend, it will show a thumb and give you the chance to “unlike”, but if you do this you will probably be dead within a week, and I’ll tell the police I know nothing.
Edit Profile Page – COMPLETE
Finally, and I am delighted to announce this, users will be able to edit their profiles! Hallelujah I hear you say. Thank you all for your patience. I’ve sourced the problem here and it will be fixed ASAP. Once this has been fixed, when logged in you will see a “My Profile” section replace the “Options” button. Clicking this will allow you to do all sorts of cool stuff like change your password, hook your profile up to Facebook (and soon, Twitter), and add some other details like IM usernames. Wicked.
Homepage Changes – COMPLETE
You will see the homepage change slightly on the right hand sidebar. We realise a lot of users are missing Luke’s movie content and plan to add a small section where you can see all his latest articles. Also, we will strip out the “featured video” widget, as this is going to have its own page dedicated to it instead. Finally, on the “Recent Articles” windows, you will see some minor changes which is required to try save some space (and stop you hurting your little fingers scrolling too much). The plan is to lose the excerpts of each review, and display them upon hovering over the review title. This will save space and keep the functionality. It’s called killing two birds with one stone. In fact, I also plan to add a small number next to the review title to show the number of comments on each article. That’s three birds, then.
Login With Facebook Button
This button is no good to us in its current position, so I plan to move it up next to the website logo (along with a Twitter one eventually) where everyone can see it next to the generic login button. A wee change that should help it get noticed that little bit more.
That’s all at the moment folks. There’s plenty more to be done but this should keep me busy over the coming days. Not to mention the mass amount of content coming your way. It’s going to be big. I would like to thank each and every one of you for sticking with us while we get things refined to the point where everyone is happy. This website has a lot more in the pipeline to offer you, and I’m excited to let you see its true potential.
I’ll be blogging sometime next week to discuss the changes and problems I may have encountered, and to further document any changes made that haven’t been mentioned here. As usual, any opinions, feature requests or hate mail can be left below.
